Oh, What a Glorious Morning

Monday, May 12th, 2008

After a right rotten weather day yesterday (cold, very windy, rain, rain, rain), I find that outside my studio is now a pristine green day with a lovely fair sky. The wispy clouds are moving quickly across the sky lights, so it’s still windy on some level. All of the redbud blossoms are finally gone. On Saturday, Greg planted a hydrangea bush and tomatoes in the back, and I planted impatiens (around the hostas) and geraniums (in the sun) in the front. My best effort was hanging two floral baskets on the porch hooks. Instant success for the woman with two purple thumbs! Winsor Violet, to be exact.

Mother’s Day was yummy. My kids ‘granny sat’ after sending us away with a gift card and demands that we stay gone for at least five hours. We had a delicious dinner before seeing The Visitors at the Arts Cinema. The film gave a very touching view of immigration and was such a nice contrast to the shoot-em-ups and fantasy films on offer. It was so good to spend time with Greg without sharing him with my mother.

This past weekend was not a good one for her. She’s increasingly confused, and couldn’t remember my name yesterday. When I told her, she gasped in surprise. She called me her stepmother to anyone who would listen, and when I first got up yesterday, I saw that she had removed pictures from her bedroom wall and piled them on top of quilts from all over the house.

We all manage to spend the allotted 24 hours in some way, regardless of circumstances, so I hope that yours are blessing-filled. But leave my quilts alone!

On Mothering

As U.S. Mother’s Day approaches, I have two roles. Mother to my kids, and now mother to my mother. Carey and I went to see ‘Baby Mama’, and there’s a scene where the protagonist’s sister is trying to decide if it’s poo or chocolate on her kid’s hand. She licks it. It’s chocolate.  I hope that wasn’t a spoiler for you. Today as Mom finished breakfast, she stood and saw a big dark spot on the upholstered seat of her kitchen chair. She turned her blue jean-ed bottom to me, bent over and asked, ‘did I poop myself?’ It was blackberry jam, but I’ll be darned if I was going to lick the chair to solve that mystery.

Carey is occupying my studio as she finishes a big commission, so I’m spending a lot of time playing Scrabulous  and thinking about  cleaning. Not doing it, just thinking. Just took mom hot chocolate and cookies. My sister is coming next week so that Greg and I can spend our anniversary weekend away, and what’s clean to us doesn’t seem as clean when company is coming. She surprised us. Greg just started a new job and doesn’t have any vacation, and who has any money these days? But we’ll certainly take advantage of a mom-sitter, and might head to Western KY to see our dear friend, Jean Wiggins. It’s been far too many years, and she was such an important part of our lives for so long.

Happy Mother’s Day. If you aren’t one, you certainly have or had one, so celebrate!
